WHY BE BIOSECURE?
PROTECTING & MAINTAINING HEALTHY ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS

One of the main attractions of SUPBIKERUN events is the stunning scenery and habitats that the events are set in.  Protecting them and maintaining their healthy ecological systems for us all to enjoy for the future is all our responsibility.

In the UK, human activity has led to the introduction of approximately 2,000 non-native species, of which 10-15% are classed as invasive non-native species (INNS). INNS can damage infrastructure, disrupt native biodiversity and harm our health, costing nearly £2 billion annually to the economy.

They are easily spread to new sites via footwear, clothing and equipment – tackling these pathways through which they can spread is known as biosecurity. Following a good biosecurity routine helps to prevent establishment of invasive species, protecting both you and the environment from harm.

SUPBIKERUN IS TEAMING UP WITH AQUA

AQUA-BiodiversitySUPBIKERUN are teaming up with AQUA to help minimise the risk of these accidental INNS transfers. Simple and easy-to-follow biosecurity initiatives, such as Check Clean Dry, cut off this pathway and help to keep waterways open for everyone to use.

This VIDEO explains more about how to stop the spread of INNS.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
HELP STOP THE SPREAD OF INNS

BEFORE AND AFTER THE EVENT

1. Check your wetsuits, paddle boards, bikes, trainers and any other kit for signs of mud, aquatic animals or plants. Remove and dispose of on the site.

2. Clean everything thoroughly, for example in between tyre grooves and nooks of trainers, with hot water if possible. Do not pour the water into drains or water courses.

3. Dry your kit. Drain off any water, and sponge or towel down for as long as possible. It’s important to properly dry kit as some invasives can survive up to two weeks in damp conditions.

SUP

When using your paddle board in different waterways, it’s important to follow biosecurity protocol to prevent the spread of aquatic invasives. Click here for more information on how to Check, Clean and Dry your stand up paddle board.

BIKE

When mountain biking, it’s easy for bikes to get very muddy and potentially contaminated with invasives. Ensure your bike is clean before the event. Then after the event, properly clean off any mud and plant matter from your bike, your tires and your shoes and clothing and leave to dry. Consider bringing along a ‘biosecurity kit’, containing water and a brush to clear mud from your bike and shoes.

RUN

Ensure your shoes are properly cleaned, especially between the grooves, with no visible mud or plant material when you arrive at the site. After the event, do the same with your clothing and shoes.

By following and promoting these biosecurity measures, you help to protect the environment and waterways. This ensures future multi sports events can take place and preserves local biodiversity for everybody to enjoy.
